Practical Tips to Maximize Your Continuing Education and Consultation

To get the most from your ongoing learning and consultation, consider these strategies:

  • Set clear goals

Identify specific skills or areas you want to improve. Share these goals with your consultant to focus sessions effectively.

  • Prepare cases in advance

Bring detailed case notes and questions to consultation. This preparation makes discussions more productive.

  • Practice regularly

Use EMDR techniques in your sessions consistently. The more you practice, the more natural the process becomes.

  • Engage in peer learning

Join EMDR study groups, consultation groups or workshops. Learning with peers enhances understanding and provides additional perspectives.

  • Reflect on your experiences

After sessions and consultations, take time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. This reflection deepens learning.

  • Take notes during consultation

With so much information coming at you, be prepared to write down the main ideas and the reference tools that your consultant recommends. There can be specific wording, adjustment to the order of things, or even book recommendations that are vital to maximizing the effectiveness of your therapy.

  • Ask questions when you don't understand

Many people feel intimidated to ask questions when their consultant has explained something but they still don't quite understand. Don't be afraid to ask for another explanation, example or perhaps putting it in different words. It's your time to learn, and any consultant would be happy to ensure you understand what they are suggesting.

  • Bring a recording as often as possible

It's intimidating to bring a recording of a session, however, reviewing a recording can be the most effective way to get feedback that can reshape your practice exponentially. Many consultants require recordings, but don't require them for every consultation. Bring them as often as you can. There's no better way to see what you are seeing in a session than to show your consultant exactly what happens.
